Service Description

**This booking is for the CGC Test Prep Class ONLY** The American Kennel Club started the Canine Good Citizen Program ® in 1989 as a means of rewarding dogs who were well-behaved companions at home and in the community. The goals of the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award program are to: - Teach the overview of responsibilities of safe dog ownership to owners, and - Provide evaluation of basic behavioral skills and measures of good manners to the owners and their dogs. Earning the CGC award will ensure that your dog is a well-respected member of your community. The Canine Good Citizen award is the one of the first AKC certificates your dog can earn and CGC certification provides a measure of achievement for an excellent foundation in training. Some therapy dog groups require the CGC certificate as a prerequisite for therapy work; there are CGC neighborhoods and hiking trails; and a number of state legislatures have endorsed the CGC concept. Canine Good Citizen obedience training is routinely provided in our TCDTC Basic Obedience One and/or Two courses. Training in our classes to prepare for the CGC is fun and useful. You’ll find that training for the CGC certificate in our Basic classes will also help you establish a closer bond with your dog. **This one-night class booking is for CGC Test Preparation ONLY**. Your dog should already have good behavioral control and know basic commands for sit, down, come when called, ignoring food on the floor or in people's hands, ignoring other dogs, maintaining a loose leash while walking and in stationary behavior, and able to be at ease and quiet with a stranger holding the leash while you as the owner are out of sight for a few minutes. Treats are permitted only for this practice class, the CGC test does not allow food rewards or enticement. Equipment needed: 6’ leash, buckle collar or harness, soft/moist treats. Handlers may wear a mask during the COVID era, but it is currently not required. .
